The Tree of Life
The Peace Agreement signed in Mozambique on 4th October 1992 brought sixteen years of civil war to an end.
A serious problem remained in the form of millions of weapons. A project was initiated to consolidate the new peace by eliminating these weapons. Entitled 'Transforming Arms into Tools', the aim of the project was to collect as many arms as possible among the population and to destroy them, so at the same time preventing them from finding their way into neighbouring countries at knock-down prices.
The success of this campaign led to an associated project to turn the decommissioned arms into works of art.
The following pages display scenes from the project, which has resulted in an internationally acclaimed exhibition.
