Ceasefire in the Middle East
by Pressureworks, published 1 August, 2006
Thanks to all those supporters who have supported our call for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East. An amazing 4362 of you completed the Pressureworks online petition.
After weeks of deadly bombardments and fighting a very fragile situation exists which will hopefully bring some relief.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, passed unanimously at the weekend, is not a ceasefire. It is a cessation of hostilities. A ceasefire will be based on certain principles that are laid out in the resolution. This includes Israeli forces leaving Lebanon and a UNIFIL supported Lebanese army presence across the south of the country.

In other words this resolution is intended to pave the way for a permanent ceasefire.

In the meantime, Israel has said they will continue with the sea and air blockade of southern Lebanon as well maintaining a ban on all traffic south of the Litani river. Hezbollah have stated that they reserve the right to attack Israeli soldiers who remain on Lebanese soil and Israel has pledged that it will respond.

Lebanese and Israeli civilians are reacting cautiously to this new development. Christian Aid, whilst welcoming any move that helps prevents the loss of life, remains concerned that this resolution alone will not solve the conflict and hopes that the international community maintains its focus on supporting the region out of this crisis.
Build-up to the ceasefire
