Barclays respond to email action
by Pressureworks, published 2 March, 2007
In February we launched an email action asking Barclays' Group Chief Executive, John Varley, to publish a full account of the company's global CO2 emissions. Read Barclays' reply to campaigners and our response.
Campaign update, July 2007

We believe a full account of carbon emissions should not just be the emissions from their offices and travel but also the significant emissions generated from Barclays' lending and investment activities. See the full text of Barclays' reply.

Christian Aid's response to Barclays
Importance of emissions from loans and investment

Christian Aid welcomes the progress Barclays has made in tackling the CO2 emissions resulting from the energy and transport that it uses, however more needs to be done to tackle the very significant emissions that occur as a result of Barclays' lending.

These emissions are huge and they are at the heart of what Barclays does as a bank.

Barclays recently announced that profits from some of the sections responsible for lending and investment rose by as much as 55%.
What we want Barclays to do
We call on Barclays to:

- invest some of its recent profits in developing an effective system for its calculating and disclosing the CO2 emissions from its loans and investments

- commmit to a timetable for publishing the emissions resulting from its loans and investments

- commit to a timetable for implementing a 5% reduction in all its carbon emissions.
What you can do
Act now: Email John Varley, Group Chief Executive of Barclays

If you have already taken this action, please send the link to a friend. Ask them to take action too!
