Why bother?
by Pressureworks, published 4 January, 2006
Writing letters. Signing petitions. Making banners. Taking to the streets and generally making a nuisance of ourselves... Why do we do it? Does it change anything?
It's easy to be cynical about campaigning. The image of people marching comes to mind: People looking too hot or too cold, shuffling along holding aloft homemade banners, making a noise because they feel nobody's listening to them... Losers.
'Campaigning works. You may not find this inspiring. We do.'
We don't feel like that about campaigning though. We don't feel that way because we don't like the poverty, injustice, disease and conflict that prevails in too many parts of the world and affects too many people. It spoils our day to know that so many people are suffering so much.
A bad scene
The real losers are those who suffer unnecessarily; but we also think that people who know how bad it is for hundreds of millions - and let's face it, who doesn't know it? The scandal of global poverty is hardly a secret anymore, is it? - who are the losers.
'We all have our reasons for taking up a cause ...'
We want change.  Particularly when it's clear that there are  ways of changing these things. Campaigning works. You may not find this inspiring. We do.

Marching - demonstrating - is only a small part of the campaigning picture of course. If it were done just for the sake of it, it would deserve a poor reputation. But generally, it isn't. Because going on 'demos' is about showing the world you care about something; that you care enough to take your feelings out into the world and let everybody know about them.
Do something - not nothing
We all have our reasons for taking up a cause and campaigning. In the end, in our wealthy, self-centred UK society, we do things for ourselves. Your own sense of personal satisfaction and the knowledge that when you had the chance to do something to make the world a better place you did something and not nothing - that you took the plunge - is what will make you bother.
'We campaign for two simple reasons...'

At Pressureworks we do it for two simple reasons.

We want change and campaigning works.
