Sponsored by letters
by Pressureworks, published 7 February, 2007
Sponsored by Letters is similar to a bog-standard event. But there's a crucial difference: We don't want money – we want letters calling for Trade Justice sent to politicians and decision-makers. As many as you can drum up.
It’s simple. And effective. Just organise a ‘sponsored’ event and ask people to ‘sponsor’ you by writing letters to our chosen campaign ‘targets’. It could be the Prime Minister. It could be head of the IMF. We let you know.
Shame them into action.
This is a brilliant way to get people you know – and don’t know – involved in the Trade Justice Campaign. And it’s brilliant for grabbing the attention.

We intend to get so many letters on Trade Justice sent to policy-makers that we shame them into action. Research shows that personal letters are an effective way to influence politicians. A survey of MPs said letters were 20 times more effective than media coverage in raising their awareness of campaigns.
Go on, test them.
All you have to do is:

1. Click here to order the Sponsored by Letters action pack or download the key resources below:

Letter To Tony Blair: if you're asking people to sponsor you, you could send them this letter by email for them to save, amend and send.
Sponsorship Form: use this to collect the names of your sponsors.
Action Leaflet: this lets you and your supporters know exactly how the sponsored by letters campaign works
Poster: use this to publicise your event

2. Choose a Sponsored by Letters event (a walk, bike ride, marathon, hymn sing, or unfair games for example)

3. Publicise your event and ask friends, family, colleagues, church members etc to sponsor you by writing a letter

4. Hold the event - invite local media along. Click here to find out how.

5. Go back to your sponsors once you've held the event and ask if they have written their letter. Contact Christian Aid to let us know how you got on and how many letters you 'raised'. Send your completed sponsorship form to:
