Be a campaigns organiser
by Pressureworks, published 6 February, 2007
Campaigning is crucial to our work. Put simply, we might as well go home if we don’t tell people what’s going on in world - and what we think we should be doing about it - we will lose the ear of influential politicians. We will lose the public’s attention. In fact, we may as well give up.
That’s how important campaigning, and the volunteers who help run our campaigns, are. Over the last ten years, Christian Aid supporters have done more and more campaigning - for Fair Trade goods in supermarkets; for debt cancellation; and for trade justice. We are proud of our long list of successes.
We might as well go home if we don’t tell people what’s going on in world
Campaigns organisers are key to this success. Volunteers organise a group of people to distribute campaign resources such as Take Action. Consisting of postcards and booklets explaining a bit about the campaign, these are sent out to decision makers to persuade them to take action. Campaign organisers also set up local events such as vigils, demonstrations, or imaginative one-offs, such as fairtrade food tastings.

It goes without saying that you will need to be keen to change the world, and have a broad understanding of development issues (which is where this site comes in…). You also need to be friendly, approachable and good at involving others.

You can start off by distributing and collecting in campaign postcards and if you have more time you could organise events and liasing with other groups in your area. Support will come from your area office and Christian Aid's Campaigns team. You’ll be part of a large and growing network of campaigners.
