We won't do your dissertation for you, and we can't send you overseas for months at a time, but we will come and speak to your group if you want us to.
Can you help with my dissertation?

We receive loads of requests for info, and if we took the time to answer all of them we'd never have time for campaigning! Check the Development Studies and Student Media sections to see if there's an answer to your question.

If you're up for doing some campaigning and awareness-raising, though, you might be able to get more info for your dissertation by the back door. Take a look at the Pressurepoints scheme. If you can demonstrate that your work will be seen by students and they'll take action, we might be able to help you out. For example, could you make a display or give a presentation explaining what Christian Aid’s doing in a country you’re studying?

Can I work abroad as a Christian Aid volunteer?
We don’t make overseas placements; instead, we support community-based organisations already working on the ground in developing countries. They know the problems, the language, the culture – so they're best place to sort things out.

At the same time, we believe that some of the biggest obstacles to development, such as unfair trade rules and world debt, need to be challenged from inside the UK.  You can make a massive difference by helping us campaign. For example, you could sign up to get our monthly action email, PUSH, or you could join the Pressurepoints scheme

If you're set on going abroad here are some starting points.

Do I have to be a Christian to work with you?

No. If you think that global poverty is a scandal, you’re coming from the same place as us, and we want to work with you. Poverty's too complicated to be wiped out by any one cultural group, by any one religion. We've got to work together to fix this.

So how Christian is Christian Aid?
We are the official overseas development agency of 39 church denominations. We’re an inclusive organisation – supporters, volunteers, campaigners and staff come from a range of religious beliefs. We are not a missionary organisation – we work with people according to need, and regardless of religion.

Where can I get resources?
There's an order form in the 'Useful Stuff' section. Enjoy.

Can a group of us volunteer for the Pressurepoints scheme?
Yes – that'd be great!

We need to have someone's name so we know who to contact and who is responsible for the project. That person is responsible for the resources, the budget, for keeping in touch and for making sure we get a report at the end of the project.

We're not going to try and take over your identity – if you're in People and Planet, SPEAK, SCM or another group, that's fine – we just want to help you do what you're already doing.

There will be opportunities for everyone in the group to get training, support and resources.

Can you have two Reps at a uni?
Yeah, sometimes there are two Reps on the Pressurepoints scheme at one uni. Get in touch with the current Rep and see if you can help out. You've got to volunteer with the Rep first, though. If they recommend you work with them, we'll probably go for it. You'd agree to work for no more than 15 hours a week between the two of you, and you've got to work as a team!

Why are you paying students? Shouldn’t you spend the money overseas?
Sixty-three percent of Christian Aid’s income supports projects overseas. Some of it is spent on emergency work - tackling the effects of poverty and disasters. Most of our work is in long-term development, enabling people to build themselves up out of poverty - learning skills or getting investment to start their own businesses.

Sixteen percent of our income goes on campaigning and education, because we believe in tackling the root causes  of poverty. Many people are trapped in poverty because wealthy nations look out for themselves too much, even if that has a negative impact on poorer countries. If those of us in wealthier countries can hold our governments to account we will make a massive difference to the lives of poorer people overseas. That’s why we spend money on campaigning work here.

Having a wage means a student can concentrate on their degrees and campaigning work instead having to balance both with a job. That means more students will be available to put pressure on our government, and to add their voices to those of millions of other campaigners. That pressure leads to lasting change. We think that is worth investing in.
